Dream Dictionary

A dictionary from the Spellbook — symbols A–Z, and themes from Alphabet through Wedding.

The symbol list and themes follow the Dream Moods A–Z dictionary and theme pages. The readings here are written for the Spellbook. A symbol is a reading, not a prediction.

Death in a dream is usually an ending, not a forecast. A habit, a role, or a season is closing. If you are grieving, the dream may simply be grief.

  • Bereavement

Grief in the dream is sadness you have not let out. If a real loss is underway, the image is part of coping.

    Death

  • Black

This color is the unknown, danger, mourning, or a lack of support, and it invites a deeper look at yourself. It can also be open potential; with white, it asks for a cooler decision, or names a low mood.

    ColorsDeath

  • Burial

The ceremony of putting to rest means a bad habit or a negative situation has been released. Burying the living, or being buried while alive, is turmoil and a feeling of being stifled.

    See also Funeral.

    Death

  • Casket

A casket holds fear of dying, and also a closed, womb-like space, or a habit that can at last be put away. Empty, it is a split that will not mend; a body inside is a low, confined stretch and a situation that should finish. White points to innocence already lost.

    Death

  • Coffin

A coffin is fear of death, and also the womb, or a habit ready to be buried. An empty one is a difference that will not heal; a body inside is a low period and a situation that needs to end.

    Death

  • Dead

Speaking with someone who has died can mean you are keeping their company in order to finish goodbye, or that a current tie resembles them and needs to end. It can also warn that the people around you are a poor influence.

    See also Death.

    CharactersDeath

  • Death

Your own death means an old way of living is ending so a new one can start. A loved one's death points to a quality they carry that is missing in you, or to a bond that has already changed.

    CommonDeath

  • Eulogy

Giving a eulogy means thoughts you have held back need to be said. Hearing your own means you are reviewing what you have done, or ending an old attitude.

    Death

  • Execution

An execution means someone or something should be cut out of your life. Your own means guilt, or a habit you want gone.

    Death

  • Funeral

Your own funeral means a part of you is being buried instead of faced. Someone else's means you are closing a relationship or letting go of anger you have carried.

    See also Burial.

    Death

  • Grave

Standing at a grave means an issue you thought was finished still needs a look, and you are the one who must face it. It can also be a chapter closing, or a pun on feeling grave.

    Death

  • Graveyard

A graveyard is the discarded parts of you, and fear of what you do not know. It can also be a loss and a period of mourning.

    Death

  • Grim Reaper

The Grim Reaper is a rejected part of your character, or the end of a habit, situation, or relationship. A friend who becomes him means you no longer recognize who they are.

    CharactersDeath

  • Killer

A killer means an important feeling has been cut off and your sense of self is thinning. It can also be the sharp end of a healing, when you finally stop something that has gone on too long.

    Death

  • Killing

Killing someone in a dream is temper about to slip, or the wish to end a trait in yourself that the other person stands for. Being killed is a habit or a feeling you are trying to finish, or the shock of being let down.

    See also Murder.

    Death

  • Morgue

A morgue is dreadful news about to arrive. It can also mean you are ready to lay the past to rest.

    Death

  • Mortuary

A mortuary means growth is stalled because talent is unused. It can also be parts of yourself that should be discarded.

    Death

  • Mourning

Mourning is inability to release the past, or, in the opposite reading, proof that you can accept a loss. Mourning clothes on others are grief and a disturbance in your social circle.

    Death

  • Murder

Committing a murder, as a symbol, is the end of an old habit or an old way of thinking, or anger you have stored. Witnessing one is deep anger, often at a trait in yourself; being the victim is a bond cut off, or talent left unused.

    See also Killing.

    Death

  • Sympathy

Sympathy here often means the reverse: you are short on it while awake, and emotionally distant.

    Death

  • Tears

Your own tears mark a season of mending, or plain pain. Someone else's tears ask you to notice how your actions land on them.

    Death

  • Tomb

Tombs are parts of you kept buried. Your own tomb is a venture into a side you thought was gone.

    Death

  • Tombstone

Your own stone marks a major change in some part of life.

    Death

  • Undead

The undead are fears and rejected parts of you. Being surrounded by them means issues you thought were finished have returned.

    Death

  • Undertaker

This figure says seize the duties of your own life. It can also mark a new beginning.

    Death

  • Will

Writing a will is looking ahead into a new phase, or a decision that is final. It can pun on willingness, or on what you leave behind.
